I’m going to need a bit of help with this.
I received my running videos and after looking at all of them I’m not sure I see a huge difference π
Have a look, here’s Shoes On:
Here’s Shoes Off:
What do you think?
The one difference I HEAR is the thud-thud-thud-thud in the first video. Β And I think the other difference is in this:
I’m running with smaller steps when barefoot so I don’t reach quite as far ahead with my heel. That hopefully means when my foot hits the ground, it’s underneath my body and not ahead.
Anyway, a simple thing made complicated π
As far as daily running goes – I’m ok now. I stretch daily, although not twice a day, and haven’t had any ankle or knee niggles this week.
Next run: tomorrow.
Next race: Saturday. 10km in Richmond park.
P.S. Just to clarify – I still run in those black Nike Vomeros, I just run with smaller steps now. Our house renovation is eating up all my money, the new Innov8s or Vivos or Mizunos or Newtons will have to wait π

July 6, 2013 at 1:56 pmI didn’t see much difference, but I am not a pro.Your technique seems fine, your feet are straight and you don’t run toes first! How is the renovation coming along?

July 5, 2013 at 9:01 am@MrsB_LDN looks like you’re heel striking w/shoes on & mid foot striking w/shoes off?

July 4, 2013 at 9:23 pmWhat has been said before. π You’re more midfoot striking when barefoot, which is supposed to be a good thing.
Overall, great running posture! (Seriously, first thing I noticed :p)
Yay for running again, and good luck with the race!

July 4, 2013 at 9:20 pmI have had a look at some of them. My aim has exactly been that – trying to land under my body. I need to get myself filmed in a little while again to see IF I have actually learned it. Fascinating stuff π

July 4, 2013 at 8:13 pmyour barefoot pattern shows a much better foot landing position compared with the heel strike in the shoes. I wouldn’t worry about it though just be mindful of how you land when you run barefoot and try to replicate that when you put your shoes back on. The heel strike pattern is very unkind on your joints further up your body as the heel has no shock absorbing properties, landing more mid foot as shown in your barefoot video activates your muscles correctly meaning the shock absorbing qualities of your muscles are being used when running. I hope this helps, running barefoot is not always practical for us all but we can learn good lessons from it that can be carried forward when we put our shoes back on.

July 4, 2013 at 8:27 pmThank you for having a look. I think I have learned a lot from this experience, I have adjusted my form but kept the shoes for now – I find running with smaller steps and better posture is already an improvement. Once it’s second nature and I don’t have to think about it anymore, maybe then I can think about trying other kinds of shoes. Sounds reasonable? π

July 4, 2013 at 8:34 pmyeah sounds perfect, learn good form and you can run in anything, not sure if I have shared these videos with you before but they are a great guide to show how to make small alterations to your form but make big improvements. http://www.goodformrunning.com/learn-good-form-videos running barefoot is great and I try to add at least a few barefoot sessions into my weekly routines but I never run out and about barefoot just on soft grass in a park, everything else I run in shoes. What I take from barefoot running is the feeling of landing on my mid-foot which is a much healthier way to run. The real key is to get your lead foot landing just under your body as you land as I still see many barefoot runners over-striding which can cause just as much damage. I hope this stuff helps you out.

July 4, 2013 at 8:12 pm@MrsB_LDN Was it comfortable going barefoot? It’s not something I will be doing any time soon, but just curious
