3 In marathon/ running

Today’s long run was a bit of a cock-up

It was drizzling a bit this morning so the boys and I took a bus half way to school. I was all kitted out for my long run as usual – Camelbak, iPhone for music, Garmin, gloves – and once I dropped them off I started my run that was meant to be 22km.

I ran to Richmond Park and then after exiting the park I thought I’d do a little loop before heading back towards Putney through Roehampton. I ran and ran and enjoyed the music and all of a sudden I saw signs indicating that I was in Mortlake. Hmmm. I’d heard of Mortlake but I had no idea where on the map Mortlake was.

Then I saw the Thames and realised that my little loop has turned into something else 😐

I should have turned right at the golden star, not left.

I didn’t want to stop to look at the map on my phone because I was wet and stopping would have meant getting cold. I started to recognise a few spots soon but still for some reason had no sense of what direction I was actually running. Until I was on the bridge crossing over to Chiswick! I did some math in my head and realised that if I ran all the way home now it would be over 31km!

Thank g*d I had my Oyster card with me from the school run, I ran to Putney and then hopped on the bus home. Of course it was the slowest and coldest freaking bus. I tried to pass the time by tweeting but my fingers were so frozen they didn’t work very well. I can’t remember the last time I was that cold. Probably that time in 2002 when we got stuck in a snowstorm on Mount Kosciuszko in Australia and I thought I was going to be dug out on the next day 😐

Anyway, I did make it home and had a long hot shower and a lot of food and then went to bed. The night before I had slept maybe 4 hours max, if that, but of course once you’re overtired, you don’t fall asleep very fast. And then when you finally do your freaking phone rings only after 30 minutes and you’re up. Grrr… Should have turned that thing off.

This week has actually been all kinds of crap (there is a reason for my insomnia), tomorrow has to be a better day, right?

[…] long run this week was over 2km longer than it was supposed to be but considering it could have been 9km too long, all’s well. I didn’t get sick after those 2 hours in the rain and a freezing bus ride […]

On the positive side a few extra kms in the bank and now you know where Mortlake is (it’s a bit of an inbetweeny place anyway). Onwards and upwards! Plus your runs can only get better. Hope you get more sleep tonight

I would have actually kept running, the legs felt fine, but I knew it’s a bad idea to up your long run from 18km to 31km the next!
