Some things in life are about “mind over matter”, some things are not

I keep on celebrating my birthday and eating chocolate 🙂

But even though I’m a little bit on cloud 9 right now following all the celebrations and thinking about how many great friends I have made here in London, I keep taking the Citalopram that I restarted 10 days ago.

It’s complicated to explain but the thing is that there are many things in life that are a matter of “mind over matter” and there are some things are not.

For example, running marathons is mind over matter, lifting heavy weights is mind over matter, staying calm when kids are having tantrums is mind over matter, giving up sugar is mind over matter, and learning to climb a rope / jump onto a 30″ box / speak a new language / etc. is mind over matter.

Depression, however, is NOT a matter of “mind over matter”.

Of course it helps to eliminate situations and/or people from your life who are causing you stress and anxiety, but often depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain and no amount of positive thinking will fix it.

I have tried to think, meditate, exercise and eat myself out of this current black hole but I’m convinced that my brain needs a bit of a jump-start again. It tends to need that every once in a while.

At least it’s good to know that it’s my brain that’s a tiny bit faulty and that my D has nothing to do with the people I’m surrounded by 🙂

    sometimes we need to do what we need to do. i sometimes want to go back on citalopram but then the next day I feel fine so i continue without.
    you are a wonderful person with or without it xxx

      You are doing so well! I’ll give the meds a go for the next 6-12 months and then come off again. Hopefully one day I’ll be off them for longer periods than I’m on them.

    Hey mate, my friend recommended a book a while back when I was in a real breaking point. It’s called ‘self help for your nerves’ by claire weekes. It’s really helped me. Also, have you tried therapy? I’m doing ok at the moment (I’m on sertraline and I like it, a few side effects but it works for me) but I’ve made the decision to speak to a few therapists that have been recommended to me, if I get myself into another black hole again.
    If you ever want to chat further don’t hesitate to reach out. I know what it’s like and speaking (even if you want to talk on the phone give me a shout I’ll send you my number) has helped me immensely more than any exercise, happy movies or comfort food ever could. Take care. x

      I have tried therapy a few times in the past but the thing is that when I’m not on medication I ‘make’ problems out of things that are not really problems but when I am on medication I see and feel clearer and have nothing to talk to the therapist about and they get bored 😐
