On Wednesday morning I took my mother and my kids to the airport. They flew off to Estonia and I won’t see them until the 28th when I go over there myself. It’s a weird thing letting your kids go for that long – it’s awesome yet a little bit sad at the same time. We did it last summer as well though so I know the boys are having a great time and not missing me too much.
MrB and I are trying not to miss them too much either – we have two weeks of DINK life and we’re determined to make the most of it. So far it’s been 4 days and here’s what we’ve been up to:
Day 1 – After coming home from the airport I tackled my errands/to-do list for 2014 and got most of the items crossed off. In one day. In the evening I took part of the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge 5.65km race with a team from my work. I came 2nd in our team of 20 with the time of 25:57. My street cred at work went up a LOT.
Day 2 – Work, Crossfit at lunch, dinner out and then The Good Enough Mums Club musical in Balham. Great night out with a friend and an awesome performance.
Day 3 – Work, Crossfit at lunch, Chinese take out for dinner and several episodes of 24.
Day 4 (today – Saturday) – Slept until 10. Ten.Freaking.A.M. Then had breakfast and dug out my old cycling kit. I cycled 6 days a week for 5 years when we lived in Canberra. Since we moved to London I have not been on my bike. I’m scared of riding in traffic and running always seemed easier. Today the sun was out and we had nowhere to be and nothing to do so it was time for me to let go of my fear after 8.5 years and get on the bike.
Turned out that my shoes are in good nick, my bike’s in good nick, my helmet’s in good nick but my clothes had suffered being in a box for so long. When I put on the first pair of shorts the rubber on the inside of the hems shattered into a bazillion little black dots. Thankfully my second pair had weathered the storage better (Netti, in case you’re wondering).
At noon we were off. Me very slowly, trying to figure out the gears again and the clip on shoes and the bloody traffic and crazy pedestrians. The destination was Richmond Park, it’s a bit over 9km to get there and somehow I made it there without an incident. Since I’ve ran around the park before and know the route, I said good bye to the Mr who sped off and was going to meet him at the cafe after 2 laps.
I clipped in, inhaled and was off. It felt beyond amazing to be back in the saddle, 27°C didn’t bother me, I enjoyed the breeze (even though I kept breaking a lot on all the downhill bits because after not riding for so long the speed feels insane). Going uphill my quads burned, I tried to use my calves more, I visualised the Tour de France and did.not.get.off.the.saddle.
Two 10km loops of Richmond Park passed quickly (26min each) and I grinned the entire time. I love running but when I run I don’t smile. If I do it’s only internally.
I found the Mr at the cafe after the second lap and by then felt a lot more confident on the bike than I had at the start of the ride. We had coffee and slowly rode home again.
I’m so glad I did it. I’m still scared of the traffic and crashing coming downhill but I don’t want to give into the fear and I will ride again. Maybe even as soon as tomorrow 😉
After showering and having awesome coconut/pineapple/lime/protein smoothies we walked over to a bike shop and I bought myself a new pair of cycling shorts. Chamois have come a long way since I last bought cycling gear – the one in my new shorts is so thick and solid I walk like a cowboy – at least it should be nice in the saddle, my bum did complain a bit today about the 13-year-old padding.
New padding in my bag we had an early dinner at Wahaca, then bought some ice cream and came home to watch The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Tomorrow is day 5 – I can’t wait!
I think when you’ve been a parent for almost 10 years (and when you’ve lived with your mother for 8 years!) you’re allowed to enjoy 2 weeks of no kids every year without an ounce of guilt. Right? I know I’m right 🙂
