Whole Life Challenge – Day 5: Clear boundaries set my mind free


Today’s lunch: samphire (the stuff that looks like a chopped up Christmas tree), sausages and plums.

It’s day 5 of the Whole Life Challenge and while not eating sugar, dairy or gluten is not new to me, not eating quinoa, rice or oats, not drinking alcohol or checking the ingredients of everyfreakingthing IS new to me.

Still, so far the challenge has been very straight forward – I exercise daily (which I normally do anyway), I stretch daily (which I normally don’t do but 10 min of it is not a lot to fit in), I drink at least 1.5l of water (which I would anyway), I take fish oil (which I do most days anyway)…

The only thing that I don’t like so far is that this week’s ‘lifestyle challenge’ is to not read anything on the computer or phone while eating.  Lunch and dinners are easy like that but I do read my emails while I have breakfast at work and I’m afraid I’ll just lose that lifestyle point every day because I like to read my emails while I have breakfast.

Anyway, I don’t want to bore you with too many details, I’ll just write down some good and bad discoveries I’ve made since starting this challenge.

Positive discoveries:

  • Peanuts (and therefore clean peanut butter) and other legumes are allowed. Happy days.
  • Eating sardines and roast veg for breakfast is not that weird. Really.
  • There is a lot less mindless snacking in my life because if I have to think for too long what to snack on I just give up and do something else
  • I like that I actually have to think LESS  about food –  given that I have prepped some veg and protein for a few days ahead I just grab what’s ready and have more time to think about all the other things I need to get organised on a daily basis (mostly involving the children).
  • Not checking my Twitter feed while having lunch means I rest my eyes by just staring out the window into the distance.
  • So far having someone eat Häagen-Dazs next to me on the couch at night does not bother me 🙂
  • So far no cravings 🙂

Monday’s lunch: mushrooms, broccoli, avocado and mackerel.

Negative discoveries:

  • Two Chicks egg whites have guar gum in it. Boo.
  • Eating breakfast without reading my emails at the same time is impossible.
  • Coconut milk without any additives separates and is not nice in coffee.
  • Eating out is more difficult than I thought, especially if you’re out with 2 other people and you all order the exact same main, sides and drinks from the menu because they are the only things that are WLC compliant. Left the waiter just a little bit confused 🙂

These are my first reflections and I have to mention again that contrary to what I thought being really, REALLY strict with what I eat would feel like, so far I feel totally liberated because I don’t actually have to think a lot at all – I know what my days need to contain and I know what food I’m eating.

My brain likes structure and routine and boundaries. The less I have to think on the fly about mundane daily things the more my anxiety levels are under control.

It may sound weird but if you too have kids and a job and live in a big city you know that daily life can feel so hectic that sometimes it just totally overwhelms you.

And now I’m off to prep some veg and make some flaxseed focaccia for the rest of the week!

    Great post MrsB. I’ve not eaten out yet, but know that is more than likely going to be points dropped. And you are right about eating fish for breakfast. Salmon and mackeral have been a staple of mine for a couple of years now (but not at the same time).
