OK. It’s a bit of a lame title but let me explain…
A few days ago when I was cleaning out my Gmail, I found the very first email I sent to Crossfit Thames. In it I said that I’m a runner and would like to start doing Crossfit once a week. I read that and thought – Awww. Isn’t that cute?
It’s been over 2 years now and I’ve gone from once a week to twice a week to three times a week. The truth is that I just can’t get enough. I want to do.all.the.Crossfit. All.the.time.
It’s just so freaking fun. Learning new skills. Feeling like a kid. Conquering fears. Doing things that look totally impossible at first (rope climbs, headstands, handstands, chin ups, double unders, etc., etc., etc.). Feeling invincible and so freaking alive.
There’s so much pure primal joy in ‘playing’ this way. I don’t know any other way to describe it. It just feels like I was meant to do this. (I do not feel like that when I do (did) exercise videos in my living room 🙂
There’s quite a bit of this primal joy in running and in bouldering but because Crossfit is insanely full-on, the joy is insanely full-on as well.
Of course I’m still a runner but I run once or twice a week now in comparison to the three Crossfit sessions. A lot of my friends (real and online ones) are at the moment starting to talk about training for this spring’s marathons. I am not in that game this year and I am not the slightest bit jealous or regretful that I’ve made that choice. Marathons can be on hold for now. I’ve got weights to lift.
Last weekend I took part in a throwdown at my Crossfit box (hopefully I’ve been blogging about Crossfit regularly enough so that you know that Crossfit doesn’t have ‘gyms’, it has ‘boxes’; and a throwdown just means a little friendly neighborhood competition 🙂. People had previously organised teams and we took turns in two heats to do 3 workouts.
I was quite nervous beforehand but when it all started I realised that people were there just to have fun. Just like we do normally. It’s just that this time we called it a ‘competition’.
In the first workout I had to do 21 toes to rings, 21 calorie row, 15 toes to rings, 15 cal row and 9 toes to rings and 9 calorie row. All in all just 5 minutes of hardcore sweating. I should have done toes to bar instead of the rings but I still haven’t found out how to do toes to bar without a) shredding my palms and b) starting to swing like an out of control monkey. Gotta work more on them abs.
In the second workout we each had to get a 3 rep maximum in bench press. Every team only had 10 minutes so this one was a bit of a rush. I started at 40kg, then did 45kg which was a 5kg PB and then tried 47.5kg of which I failed only on the last rep. Happy days.
Last workout was increasing reps of squat cleans and over the box jumps. Weight for the squat cleans was supposed to be 40kg for women but I went with 35kg. In hindsight I should have Rx-ed (lingo for doing the workout as prescribed). I did 6, 9 and 12 reps of the cleans and the box jumps. All in all just 4 minutes of hardcore sweating 🙂
The fourth and last workout was the best (too complicated for me to remember it all) but unfortunately only the top 3 teams got to take part. Those guys (and by that I mean guys and girls) are amazingly strong, I cannot even imagine being at that level one day but then again a year ago I couldn’t imagine ever being able to do a chin up but now I can! So I know that nothing in Crossfit is impossible, it just takes time, patience and dedication. And whereas it’s good to aim for that high, every little PB is a win for me and I’m pretty chilled just enjoying the journey. Just because it’s fun, did I mention? 🙂
I had the best team to compete with (and we had the best team shirts!) and my only regrets are that the workouts were not longer, that I didn’t Rx those squat cleans and that I didn’t make more of the paleo brownies as everyone loved them and I didn’t get many myself!
I know that Crossfit is not everyone but I’m so glad that it is for me. And I jump for joy when more and more of my friends are giving it a go and sending me messages like that:
