Paleo Supper Club

Last Friday night I met up with a great bunch of fit ladies in Greenwich for Wonder Woman Workshops‘ Paleo Supper Club. The dinner, organised by Suzi, the original Wonder Woman herself and the bestest PT in Greenwich, included 3 courses of delicious, beautiful and healthy food cooked by a chef on-site just for us.


I got to catch up with some girls I know from Crossfit but I also met many others for the first time. To my surprise one of my Crossfit friends, Beth (who runs Wonder Woman Workshop’s outdoor fitness classes in Chislehurst), turns out to have studied German like I did and even lived and studied in Munich only a year before I did. For a change we talked about something other than weight lifting (although we did talk a little bit about that too!).

On the other side of me sat Sally Baker. A well-known therapist and author of books and lover of the word ‘shagging’ 🙂 That totally cracked me up. Just because ‘shagging’ is one of those English words that I know but I never really have heard anyone use it before. Since Sally works with people who not only have eating, stress, drug and depression problems but also marital problems, she used the word liberally and also told me that two of the most basic signs of a good marriage are when both parties always go to bed at the same time and when both are comfortable with asking for sex. Now you know, and can psychoanalyse your marriage 🙂

I ordered her book, Seven Simple Steps to Stop Emotional Eating, and I’m looking forward to reading it. I have a lot of my eating issues under control but I am still an emotional eater and I’m curious to read what she says.

And talking about food, since counting your macros is all the rage these days, I’ve enlisted the help of Wonder Woman Workshops’ resident nutritionist Kirsty to work out just how much of what I need to eat on what days – heavy lifting days, running days, active recovery days.

I’m not too worried about my eating in general, just those times when I just mindlessly eat due to stress/grumpiness/tiredness, but I’m interested in having someone who knows a bit more about macros than me analyse what I’m doing and hopefully give me some good tips on how to make sure my nutrition aids my training and doesn’t hinder it.

I also met Ceri of Natural Kitchen Adventures. She showed us how to take good photos of food and now that I’ve had a look around her website I can’t wait to try some of the recipes out. I don’t usually cook based on recipes, mainly I think because lots of them include ingredients that I don’t normally buy and don’t normally have in the house (Like freekeh. Why do people eat freekeh? It’s like chewing on gravel).

Ceri’s recipes seem to use a lot of the stuff that I already eat so I just get to play with different combinations of things without having to go out and buy a whole bunch of stuff that’s all new to me.

After the event I traveled back home with a lady I hadn’t met before or talked to much during the dinner because she sat way at the other end of the table. Turns out that she’s in the process of adopting a child and we talked about that all the way from Greenwich to Balham. She’s amazing and brave and talking with her was one of those conversations that make you feel touched. And not in a Jubilee-line-during-rush-hour kind of way. (London joke 🙂

    Was so lovely to meet you at the event and now to follow your journey on your blog too! Have fun cooking some healthy food! Oh and for the record I have never cooked with freekeh – its not gluten free 😉
