Tell me something I don’t already know – aka DNAfit review

About a month ago I ordered a DNAfit testing kit. Purely out of curiosity and the needΒ to throw some money away. My digestion struggles with a few things but it’s never been tested and I don’tΒ know whether it’s all anxiety related or due to true food intolerances. As for my fitness, it keeps improving, but I was hoping to gain some more insight into how my body might want to be trained or recovered.

I got the results back a little while ago, first the food ones and when you order the food test they give you the fitness test for a very discounted price so I went to for that too (two for the price of one saliva sample πŸ˜‰

Initial verdict

I read the reports and my first impression was: bummer, it’s too fluffy.

And then I felt stupid that I expected a detailed scientific report from just a saliva sample. I totally got sucked into something a little bit gimmicky… but hey ho, I laughed at myself a bit and then looked in detail at what I actually got.

There are a lot of words in the reports but they repeat a lot and they pretendΒ to beΒ very scientific – all the names for genes and their combinations and little tables with just letters and dots, the goal is probably to look scientific but it doesn’t – it looks like gibberish.

The results

Things I found out that did not surprise me at all:

  • Diet type that suits me: low carb
  • High carbohydrate sensitivity
  • Raised omega 3 need
  • Raised vitamin B need

Things I found out that didn’t exactly surprise me but made me go ‘Hmmm… interesting’:

  • No gluten sensitivity
  • No lactose sensitivity
  • Alcohol sensitivity
  • Caffeine sensitivity

The one thing that surprised me:

  • I’m almost equally suited for endurance sport and power sport i.e. running and weight lifting in my case.

I think I expected to find out that I’m more of an endurance type but maybe this explains why I cannot choose what I love more: running or Crossfit!

The summary picture:

The one thing I don’t see being true:

  • Higher than average risk of a sports related soft tissue injury.

ThisΒ has not been the case with me at all, I am pretty robust and am not injury prone.Β Maybe my increased intake of omega 3s and keeping away from sugar has already reduced the level of inflammation that my body would otherwise have, and what would/could lead to more injuries – who knows.

Would I recommend this test?

If you have money to throw away and want a pretty personalised infographic – go for it. If you truly want to know what you’re sensitive though, get a proper blood test.

If you want to know if you’re suited for endurance sports or heavy lifting – what do you enjoy more? Maybe just do what you enjoy more πŸ˜‰

Have you done the DNAfit test or something similar? Have you done a more scientific food and/or fitness test? I’d be curious to hear what other experiences people have had.

I got this a few years ago and it basically confirmed most of what I already knew as well. Interestingly it also said I was suited to both long and short distance running, which surprised me as I HATE short distance running. But it was helpful in saying I needed more of certain vitamins etc. which would help with my injury proneness so if anything I’m glad to have found out those bits of information. I take an Omega supplement every day now.
I imagine in a few years time these sorts of tests will be FAR more comprehensive than they are currently.

My report came with Omega recommendation as well. I wonder if they do it for everyone πŸ˜‰ Who wouldn’t benefit from increasing it?

Kui sa oled gluteeni ja laktoosi juba oma menΓΌΓΌst eemaldanud, siis test ei saagi nΓ€idata talumatust vΓ΅i allergiat. Ma muidugi ei tea kuidas selle testiga on lood, aga veretesti ja soolestiku uuringu puhul on kΓΌll nii πŸ™‚
