Keep your thoughts positive…

I saw a really good Gandhi quote the other day:

Keep your thoughts positive because your thoughts become your words. Keep your words positive because your words become your behavior. Keep your behavior positive because your behavior becomes your habits…

It made me think about how everything starts with your thoughts. Mind over matter. Think positive and you’re half way there. It’s hard sometimes and sometimes I think it’s ok to let your emotions out and moan a bit, but then I always try to redirect my thoughts from negative to positive. Running helps. Crossfit helps. Bikram yoga helps. I simply cannot think negative thoughts when I’m doing any of these fun/challenging things.

“Keep your behaviour positive because your behaviour becomes your habits…” made me think how it’s a little like “fake it till you make it”. I have heard a million times by now things like “I don’t have the willpower to not eat sugar” or “I don’t have the motivation to go for a run”. I always say “don’t wait for willpower or motivation – just.do.it.” (or in the case of sugar – just.don’t.do.it). Decide it (schedule it) and stick with it, don’t analyse your feelings about it. If you behave that way for long enough, it becomes a habit (I think they say it takes 11 weeks to create a habit).

I have managed to make my sugar free / dairy free / mostly-gluten free life a habit and I schedule the rest of my life around my running/Crossfit/Bikram, not vice versa.

I have not yet managed to undo some bad habits I have though (I never said I was perfect :). So that is my new task. Note to self: Decide it and just don’t.do it.

I’ll let you know how I go. Task one is to stop picking on my fingernails (a 30-year old habit :|). Task two is to not go into panic mode (headless chicken / yelling at everyone mode) when things are rushed (I cannot be late to anything so I panic if it looks like I could be… or I panic when it looks like the kids are not going to get to school for 10 minutes before lessons start).

And now I realised that I just picked on my nails again 😐  It’s not going to be a quick and easy fix but then again no major change in our lives is.

I love this quote. And it is so true, isn’t it?!

As for me, it is all about taking it one day at a time. I try hard to enjoy the present rather than planning too far ahead!
